FIX: Error message when you run an ALTER INDEX statement on a table that has CDC enabled in SQL Server 2008: "Msg 22983: The unique index <Index Name> on source table <Table Name> is used by Change Data Capture"

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you have a table that has Change Data Capture (also known as CDC) enabled. You try to run an ALTER INDEX statement on this table. In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
Msg 22983, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_cdc_ddl_event_internal, Line 77

The unique index '<Index Name>' on source table '<Table Name>' is used by Change Data Capture. To alter or drop the index, you must first disable Change Data Capture on the table.

The transaction ended in the trigger. The batch has been aborted.

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 6 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. For more information about this cumulative update package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Use the DBCC DBREINDEX statement instead of the ALTER INDEX statement.

Method 2

Use the ALL argument, and do not specify the index name in the ALTER INDEX statement.
