SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 R2 or BizTalk Server 2009.
  • You publish some schemas as a Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) service, and you configure the WCF service correctly.
  • You add the WCF service to a BizTalk project as a service reference.
In this scenario, you cannot build the BizTalk project. Additionally, you may receive various error messages. For example, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
Schema reference "<schema1.xsd>" is not a valid reference or does not exist in the current project. in <schema.xsd>

CAUSE

This problem occurs because some schemas are lost when you add the schema-based WCF service to the BizTalk project as a service reference.
