The Licensing Diagnosis tool incorrectly reports that there are no available Terminal Services client access licenses in Windows Server 2008

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Terminal Services role on a server that is running Windows Server 2008.
  • You install a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider. This WMI provider implements a WMI class that is derived from the Win32_ComputerSystem WMI class. Additionally, this WMI provider overrides an instance of the Win32_ComputerSystem WMI class.
  • You run the Licensing Diagnosis tool by using the Terminal Services Configuration snap-in.
In this scenario, the Licensing Diagnosis tool returns a 0 value for the Number of TS CALs available for clients field.

Note This reporting issue does not affect the ability of a client to request a Terminal Services client access license. To obtain the correct number of client access licenses that are available for Terminal Services, you can use the TS Licensing Manager snap-in.

CAUSE

The Licensing Diagnosis tool relies on the Win32_ComputerSystem WMI class to retrieve the number of Terminal Services client access licenses that are available from a Terminal Services license server. However, the Licensing Diagnosis tool cannot enumerate the instances of the class because there is another class that is derived from the Win32_ComputerSystem WMI class. Therefore, the Licensing Diagnosis tool reports that the number of client access licenses that are available as a 0 value.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.   • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
