An error message occurs when you rebuild a large Visual C++ 2008 SP1 solution, or when you start a debug session for a Visual C++ 2008 SP1 application

Consider the following scenario:

• You install Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
• You perform one of the following operations:
  • You rebuild a large Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 solution.
  • You start a debug session for a Visual C++ 2008 SP1 application.

In this scenario, you receive the following error message: Note This error message may occur for many reasons. This hotfix resolves only the issue that is caused by the specific reason that is mentioned in the "Cause" section.

The issue occurs because Visual Studio 2008 SP1 uses memory mapped files to search for symbol information.

The memory mapped file may not map some executable files that have a size in the hundreds of megabytes (MB) correctly. Therefore, the debugger cannot load the symbols, and the error occurs.
