Error message occurs when you move a mailbox from an Exchange Server 2003 server to an Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2010 server

SYMPTOMS

You move a mailbox from an Exchange Server 2003 server to an Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2010 server. When you do this, the operation fails. The move operation fails when the SimpleDisplayName attribute of the Exchange Server 2003 mailbox contains Nonprintable characters. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
<SimpleDisplayName of the user> is not a valid value for SimpleDisplayName. The value may only contain 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e', 'f', 'g', 'h', 'i', 'j', 'k', 'l', 'm', 'n', 'o', 'p', 'q', 'r', 's', 't', 'u', 'v', 'w', 'x', 'y','z', 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E', 'F', 'G', 'H', 'I', 'J', 'K', 'L', 'M', 'N', 'O', 'P', 'Q', 'R', 'S', 'T', 'U', 'V', 'W', 'X', 'Y', 'Z', '0', '1', '2', '3', '4','5', '6', '7', '8', '9', '"', '(', ')', '+', ',', '-', '.', '/', ':', '?', ' '. It was running the command 'move-mailbox -TargetDatabase ' <Exchange 2010 server> \ <Storage Group name> \ <Mailbox Database name> ''.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Exchange Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2010 only supports ASCII characters for the SimpleDisplayName attribute.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the display name before you move the mailbox to an Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2010 server.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
