SYMPTOMS

You start a Web browser on a Windows Embedded CE 6.0-based device. When you use the browser to visit certain Web sites, you receive the following error message:

Your browser is out of date.
For example, you encounter the problem when the browser visits the YouTube Web site.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because certain Web sites check the UAString setting to identify the browser when they are visited. The browser will use a default value which is determined by the User Agent mode that you select in the General tab of the Internet Options menu. However, this value is not supported by the Web sites that you try to visit.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this Hotfix, you can customize the values of the UAString setting that are sent to certain Web sites. This hotfix introduces a list that maintains the mapping between the values of the HostNameSuffix setting and the values of the UAString setting. This information is recorded in registry entries under the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\UAMap

The names of the registry entries are values of the HostNameSuffix setting. The type of the registry entries is REG_SZ. The data of the registry entries are the values of UAString setting. For example, there is a registry entry as follows:
Collapse this tableExpand this table
NameTypeData
YouTube.comREG_SZMozilla/4.0 (compatible; Internet Explorer Embedded; Windows NT 5.1)

In this example, if you visit a Web site whose host name ends with "youtube.com," such as the http://www.youtube.com/index.htm Web site, the value of the UAString setting will be "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; Internet Explorer Embedded; Windows NT 5.1)."

The hotfix enables the following mechanisms to customize the values of the UAString setting:
  • You can change the value of each registry entry. Also, you can add registry entries. However, some Web sites may not recognize the custom values of the UAString setting. Therefore, you should make sure that the custom values of the UAString setting can be recognized when you make the changes.
  • If the ending of a host name matches multiple suffixes, the value for the UAString setting will be selected based on the longest suffix. For example, the "wap.3g.sina.com.cn" host name that matches both the "sina.com.cn" and the "3g.sina.com.cn" suffixes. In this example, the correct value for the UAString setting will be selected based on the "3g.sina.com.cn" suffix.
  • If there is no suffix in the list that matches the host name of the URL, the default value of the UAString setting will be used.
