SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008), you create a user account that does not have the administrator permission.
  • This user has read access for a cube.
  • You process the cube.
  • You use the non-admin user account to log on to the SSAS 2008 server.
In this scenario, the Measures.X.Dim folder is created unexpectedly when you browse the cube for the first time.

You receive an error message that resembles the following if the folder is not allowed to be created. For example, you receive the error message if SSAS 2008 tries to create the folder on a read-only file system or on a read-only storage area net work (SAN) drive.
File system error: Error occured during the creation of directory: '\\?\C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.RTM10\OLAP\Data\Adventure Works DW.0.db\Adventure Works DW.0.cub\Measures.21.dim'. System Error: Invalid procedure call or argument.

RESOLUTION

Cumulative update information

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 6 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. For more information about this cumulative update package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

You must have SSAS 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed to apply this hotfix.
