Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, when you try to concurrently process two or more objects that are contained in the same database, you receive the following error message:
While attempting to acquire one or more locks, the transaction was canceled.

If you use a SQL Server Profiler trace that has the Deadlock event enabled to monitor Analysis Services processing operations when this problem occurs, a deadlock event is reported in the SQL Server Profiler trace.

This problem is more likely to occur after you update SQL Server 2005 to one of the following versions:
  • SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (SP3) (version 9.00.4266 to 9.00.4272)
    Affected cumulative update releases:
    • Cumulative update package 6 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3
For more information about cumulative update package 6 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
974648 Cumulative update package 6 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3
Note This problem only impacts Analysis Services processing operations. Other SQL Server components are not affected by this issue.

CAUSE

The affected builds introduce an additional lock, which is intended to prevent objects from being accessed concurrently by different processing jobs. When you try to process two or more objects that are contained in the same database, the new lock mechanisms result in a deadlock which causes processing operations in the same database to fail with the error message that is mentioned in the Symptoms section.

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 7 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3. For more information about this cumulative update package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
976951 Cumulative update package 7 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3
Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
960598 The SQL Server 2005 builds that were released after SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 was released
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The deadlock can occur when you process two or more objects that are contained in the same database. For example, processing two dimensions in parallel or processing two partitions in parallel may result in a deadlock if the processed objects are contained in the same database.
