SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2, you use one of the following methods to create an offline certificate request on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008:
  • The LcsCmd.exe command-line tool
  • The Communications Certificate Wizard
However, the certificate request contains only the body of the request. The certificate request does not contain the "BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST" header or the "END CERTIFICATE REQUEST" footer. Some certification authorities do not accept this body-only certificate request.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the option to include the header and the footer are mistakenly omitted from the Windows Server 2008 code path.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, apply the following updates:
977343 Description of the cumulative update for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Core Components: January 2010
977344 Description of the cumulative update for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Administration Tools: January 2010
After you apply the updates, the header and the footer are added when you create an offline certificate request.

Note The updates apply only to the installed LcsCmd.exe command-line tool or to the installed Communications Certificate Wizard. If you run the LcsCmd.exe command-line tool or the Certificate Wizard from the installation media, the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section still occurs.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, manually insert the header and the footer into the body-only certificate request.
