Error message when you try to change a deployment template in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 or in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2: "You do not have security rights to perform this operation"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) site server or a Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) site server.
  • On the site server, you are granted the following permissions for a deployment template class:
    • Read
    • Create
    • Delegate
  • You open the Configuration Manager Console window by using your credentials.
  • You successfully create a new deployment template.
  • You make some changes to the deployment template and then click Apply or OK to apply the changes.
In this scenario, you cannot apply changes the deployment template. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Error: You do not have security rights to perform this operation

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Modify permission of the deployment template class is incorrectly required when you try to change the deployment template.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install this hotfix on all System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 or System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site servers.

Note The System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 version of this hotfix is a Windows Installer (.msi) file. You must run this .msi file on the server that is hosting the SMS Provider. If the SMS provider is not on the site server, you must run the .msi file on the remote server.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Prerequisites

To resolve this issue, deploy this hotfix on all System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 or System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site servers.
