Symptoms
The Microsoft Windows Preinstall Environment (PE) 3.0 does not support Remote Network Driver Interface Specification (RNDIS). Therefore, you cannot access a remote client by using RNDIS in Windows PE 3.0.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, you must customize the Windows PE 3.0 Boot.wim file. To do this, mount the Boot.wim file and install the following hotfix by using Dism.exe. After you apply this hotfix, unmount the Boot.wim file and commit the changes. Then, follow the instructions in the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) or in the Windows OEM Preinstallation Kit (Windows OPK) to create Windows PE 3.0 on a USB Flash Device (UFD) or to a CD/DVD. Windows PE 3.0 will now support RNDIS.
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
