SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Failover Clustering feature on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.
  • You run some backup applications that use Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) in parallel.
In this scenario, the Cluster service may stop responding.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a race condition between the calls of the VSS writer of the cluster. If an OnBackupShutdown method call occurs between an OnFreeze method call and an OnThaw method call, the lock of the cluster hive is not released. This behavior causes a deadlock to occur and causes the Cluster service to stop responding.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install this hotfix.

Note Additionally, we recommend that you install hotfix 975928 before or after you install this hotfix.
