FIX: You experience several issues when you use Powershell cmdlets or AppFabric features in IIS 7.0 or IIS 7.5

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 or IIS 7.5, you may experience the following issues after you install Windows Server AppFabric.

Issue 1

You receive the following error message when you use Powershell cmdlets or AppFabric features in IIS Manager:
"Unrecognized element '<name of the custom element>' "

Issue 2

You receive the following error message when you use AppFabric configuration tools in IIS Manager:
"" (empty string) error

Issue 3

You have not installed the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Based article 970773 on your computer. When you use Powershell cmdlets or AppFabric features in IIS Manager, you receive the following error message:
"Windows Hotfix 'KB970773' is not installed. Install the fix and try again"

Issue 4

You receive the following error message when you use the AppFabric enumeration tools:
"Cannot add duplicate collection entry of type 'add' with unique attribute 'assembly' set to '<assembly name>'”

Issue 5

You set the configSource attribute in the Web.config file to reference another file that contains configuration data. When you change and update an application's monitoring configuration that is in the referenced file, the application is recycled. However, changing the monitoring configuration in a referenced file should prevent the recycling of applications that are running.

Issue 6

You receive the following error message when you configure diagnostic tracing and message logging:
"Cannot modify debug tracing because shared listener 'DublinTracing' is defined at a higher scope. Change the scope of the current operation and try again"

CAUSE

Cause of issue 1

This error occurs because of an exception that occurs when the MWA API reads the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) custom behavior configuration or the WCF custom bindings.

For example, you have the following WCF configuration:

<serviceBehaviors>
<behavior name="String">
<serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="True"/>
<Example.Examplebehavior />
</behavior>
</serviceBehaviors>
</behaviors>
</system.ServiceModel>
In this example, the serviceMetadata behavior is schematized so that it can be read by the MWA API. However, the Example.ExampleBehavior behavior is not schematized and cannot be read by the MWA API. Therefore, the MWA API returns an exception, and the Powershell cmdlets or AppFabric features in IIS Manager cannot edit the Example.ExampleBehavior behavior. The hotfix that is in this article prevents this exception, and lets the Powershell cmdlets and the AppFabric features in IIS Manager function correctly.

Cause of issue 2

This error occurs because of the presence of extensible elements in the IIS configuration that accept user-defined attributes.

For example, you have an element that is named persistenceBehavior in the system.ServiceModel element. The persistenceBehavior element is schematized to allow it to use user-defined attributes by setting its allowUnrecognizedAttribute schema setting to TRUE. If a user-defined attribute is set in the persistenceBehavior element, MWA API may throw an exception with an empty error string.

Cause of issue 3

This error occurs because the MWA API cannot assess the presence of an element in the IIS Manager configuration unless that element has schematized attributes.

Note The Powershell cmdlets and the AppFabric features in IIS Manager require that the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 970773 is installed. If this hotfix is not installed, AppFabric cannot perform any operation.

Cause of issue 4

This error occurs because the schema for the assembly collection does not allow duplicate assembly elements to exist in an application’s Web.config file and the root Web.config file. After you apply the hotfix that is described in this article, the schema allows duplicate assembly elements to exist in an application's Web.config file and the root Web.config file.

Cause of issue 5

When the Powershell cmdlets and the AppFabric features in IIS Manager try to update the monitoring configuration, the MWA API copies the configuration from the referenced file to the Web.config file. This causes IIS to recycle the application.

Cause of issue 6

This issue occurs because the schema for the sharedListeners collection is not defined correctly to allow multiple elements that have the same name to be added. This causes problems for AppFabric because sharedListeners elements are usually given the same name on multiple scopes in the IIS configuration hierarchy.

Note For example, these multiple scopes may be site and application scopes.
