SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a server farm on which some Web Front End (WFE) servers have the Remote BLOB Storage Microsoft SQL Server add-in enabled. And, other WFE servers do not have Remote BLOB Storage enabled. All WFE servers are running Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. Then, the load balancer picks a server that does not have Remote BLOB Storage enabled. In this scenario, the load balancer cannot retrieve stored content that is located on the other servers that have Remote BLOB Storage enabled.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if Remote BLOB Storage is not enabled on every WFE server. For Remote BLOB Storage to work correctly, the SQL add-in must be installed on every WFE server. If you install Remote BLOB Storage on only some WFE servers and then use Windows PowerShell to enable Remote BLOB Storage, either an error occurs, or the WFE servers are put in an unrecoverable state. Remote BLOB Storage is only supported if it is installed on every WFE server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install Remote BLOB Storage on all WFE servers in the server farm. For more information about how to use and configure Remote BLOB Storage in your WFE server farm, visit the following TechNet article:
