Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install Microsoft BizTalk 2009 Accelerator for HL7 on a computer that is running Microsoft BizTalk Server 2009.

  • You create and deploy a BizTalk Server 2009 application to receive HL7 messages by using a Minimal Lower Layer Protocol (MLLP) receive location.

  • BizTalk Server 2009 receives a continuous flow of messages from the MLLP receive location.

In this scenario, the memory usage of the BizTalk Server host instance continues to increase. This behavior may cause host throttling, and may slow down the processing of messages. When host throttling occurs, an event log that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:

Cause

This issue occurs because a component of the MLLP adapter does not release memory.

Resolution

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix. However, you must restart the BizTalk Server host instance after you apply this hotfix. For more information about this procedure, refer to the Readme.txt file that is included in the hotfix package.

Post-Installation Instruction

Another hotfix is available that fixes a similar issue that may occur in BizTalk Server 2009. We recommend that you install the hotfix that is described in this article together with the hotfix that is described in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 970492. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

970492 FIX: A BizTalk host instance consumes lots of memory and processes messages very slowly when BizTalk Server 2009 receives lots of HL7 messages

Workaround

To work around this problem temporarily, you can increase the process memory threshold setting, and then restart the host instance when the process memory usage performance counter reaches the process memory threshold. For more information about how to do this, refer to the "More Information" section.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
