SYMPTOMS

You install Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 on a server that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. You host a website on the server by using IIS 7.0. When you store some website content on a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) share, the website stops responding (hangs) intermittently. For example, this issue occurs when you store some content on a network-attached storage device. 

When this issue occurs, you cannot use Windows Explorer to access any UNC share.

Note You must restart the computer to recover from this issue.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of an error in the Server Message Block (SMB) service redirector driver (Mrxsmb.sys).

When you request a webpage on the website and then cancel the request immediately, a race condition occurs. This behavior causes a connection failure from the SMB to the UNC share.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
