Office Communications Server 2007 R2, OCS 2007 or LCS 2005 does not work correctly after you upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2008 R2

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

You have an existing Windows Server 2003 x64 forest.
Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 or Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is installed on a supported operating system.
You upgrade a domain controller in the forest to the Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 edition operating system.

In this scenario, Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 does not work correctly. For example, some parts of the Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 user interface are not visible.

Additionally, you cannot add new Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007, or Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 servers to new pools or existing pools in the forest.

CAUSE

These problems occur if the Active Directory service is upgraded to Active Directory Domain Services in Windows Server 2008 R2. In this situation, the specifiers for the forest display are updated. The specifiers make the Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 look as if the forest was not prepared.

RESOLUTION

To fix this problem, rerun the deployment of Forest Prep for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005. Forest Prep prepares the Windows Server 2008 R2 forest for the installation of Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005.

You can also use the Lcscmd.exe command-line tool to prepare the Windows Server 2008 R2 forest for the installation of Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005. To prepare the forest by using the Lcscmd.exe command-line tool, open a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

Lcscmd.exe /forest /action:ForestPrep

To make sure that the forest is prepared correctly, open a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

LcsCmd.exe /forest /action:CheckForestPrepState

Note

For an existing Windows 2008 x64 forest, you do not have to run ForestPrep after the upgrade to Windows 2008 R2.
For One Product version deployed
Please run the corresponding setup for the corresponding deployment. For Office Communications Server 2007 R2, run Office Communications Server 2007 R2 setup for running the Forest Prep action and so on.
For Coexistence of more than one Product version deployed
Make sure that you run the Forest Prep step from the highest version of the server product that is installed. For example, if you have Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 installed, run Forest Prep from the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 server, and not from Live Communications Server 2005 SP1.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 and Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 update the display specifiers in an Active Directory forest. When you upgrade to an Active Directory forest in Windows Server 2008 R2, new locales are added to the forest. Therefore, new display specifiers are also added.

When you run the Prep Forest option in the deployment tool for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005, the CheckForestPrepState action makes sure that the tab for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005 exists on each display specifier. If the display specifier does not exist on each tab, the CheckForestPrepState action reports that the forest must be re-mapped.
