SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

You install security update 978037 on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. This security update is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

You debug a console application in Microsoft Visual Studio. The application starts and a console window opens.
You stop debugging the application.

In this scenario, the console window cannot be closed from the Close button or from Task Manager. Additionally, you cannot shut down or log off from the computer. You have to press the power button to force the computer to shut down.
