You receive an error message when you try to install the PowerPivot add-in on a computer that is running Windows Vista SP1 or Windows Server 2008

SYMPTOMS

You have Microsoft Office 2010 installed on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008. When you try to install the PowerPivot add-in on the computer, you receive the following error message:
Setup is missing prerequisites:
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you must install Service Pack 2 or later and the Windows Platform Update. CAUSE

This problem occurs because the PowerPivot add-in requires the Windows Platform Update and one of the following operating systems to provide its user interface correctly:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2(SP2)
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2008 SP2, and then install the Platform Update for Windows Server 2008 and the Platform Update for Windows Vista before you install the add-in. You must be running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista SP1, or a later version in order to run Office 2010. However, the PowerPivot add-in uses the Windows Foundation Services in the Windows Platform Update to provide the PowerPivot user interface in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008. The Windows Platform Update requires Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2008 SP2. The Windows Foundation Services are included in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2.
