SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a site by using a Business Intelligence (BI) site template on a server that is running Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010.
  • You upload a Microsoft Excel workbook to a document library.
In this scenario, the Excel Mobile Viewer is not enabled.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Excel Mobile Viewer feature is not listed in the SharePoint Server Enterprise Site Collection features in the BI site template. For a list of the BI site templates, see the "More information" section.

WORKAROUND

To enable the Excel Mobile Viewer feature in existing site collections, follow these steps:
  1. Create the following script in Windows PowerShell.
    Write-Host "-----------------Getting all sites for the farm-----------------"
    $allSites = Get-spwebapplication | get-spsite -limit all
    Write-Host "Found the following sites"
    Write-Host $allSites

    # Finally, enable the features on each of these sites.

    Write-Host "----------------Activating Excel Mobile Viewer feature for each site----------------"
    Write-Warning "IF YOU HAVE RAN THIS SCRIPT ON ANOTHER FRONT-END IN THE FARM"
    Write-Warning "ALREADY YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE A LOT OF RED TEXT BELOW. THATS OK :)"
    Write-Warning "It will say something like ... is already activated at scope ... "

    if ($allSites)
    {
    	foreach ($i in $allSites)
    	{
    		Write-Host "----------------Currently deactivating/activating features on site " + $i
    		Disable-SPFeature -Identity E995E28B-9BA8-4668-9933-CF5C146D7A9F -Url $i.Url -force -Confirm:$false
    		Enable-SPFeature -Identity E995E28B-9BA8-4668-9933-CF5C146D7A9F -Url $i.Url -force
    	}
    }

    Write-Host "----------------Activating feature for each site----------------"
    Write-Warning "IF YOU HAVE RAN THIS SCRIPT ON ANOTHER FRONT-END IN THE FARM"
    Write-Warning "ALREADY YOU WILL SEE A LOT OF RED TEXT ABOVE. THATS OK :)"
    Write-Warning "It will say something like ... is already activated at scope ... "

  2. Save the script as MewaActivation.ps1 to a directory on the computer.
  3. Open the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell.
  4. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:
    set-executionpolicy unrestricted

    drive:\directory\MewaActivation.ps1

    set-executionpolicy restricted
    Notes
    • You have to replace the drive placeholder and the directory placeholder with where you saved the MewaActivation.ps1 file in step 2.
    • You may receive error messages that resemble the following. These error messages can be safely ignored.
      Disable-SPFeature : Feature 'e995e28b-9ba8-4668-9933-cf5c146d7a9f' is not activated at this scope
To enable the Excel Mobile Viewer feature for site collections that are created after you apply the Windows PowerShell script, follow these steps:
  1. Open the following file:
    %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\PremiumSite\feature.xml
  2. At the end of the <ActivationDependencies> section, add the following:
    <ActivationDependency FeatureId="E995E28B-9BA8-4668-9933-CF5C146D7A9F" />
    After you add this, the <ActivationDependencies> section should resemble the following.
    <ActivationDependencies>
