SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You open a Microsoft Access 2010 database on a SharePoint server that is running Access Services.
  • You create a report for the database. Then, you edit the report.
  • You move the Page 1 of 1 page number placeholder to a different location in the report.
  • You publish the report. Then, you open the report in your web browser.

In this scenario, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services

Error

Report viewer failed to set the report parameter defaults for this report. Select new default parameter values from the tool pane.
An error occurred during local report processing.
The definition of the report 'http://server_path/file_name.rdl' is invalid.
The Value expression for the textrun ‘Text22.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]’ refers to the global variable PageNumber or TotalPages. These global variables can be used only in the page header and page footer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because SQL Server Reporting Services supports the use of page globals such as PageNumber or TotalPages only in the header or footer of the report.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, move the Page 1 of 1 page number placeholder to the header or footer of the Access 2010 report.
