The SetPixel function fails in specific x-coordinates if Windows Aero is not running on a computer that is running Windows Vista SP1 or Windows Server 2008

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use an application that calls the SetPixel function on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008. This function sets a pixel at specified coordinates to a specified color. In this scenario, the SetPixel function fails in specific ranges of x-coordinates. Therefore, the application experiences display issues.

When this issue occurs, the first 255 pixels (0-255) on the x-axis display correctly. However, the next 255 pixels (256-511) on the x-axis do not display. The following 255 pixels (768-1023) display correctly. This pattern repeats across x-axis of the screen.

For example, you use an application that calls the SetPixel function to draw a red horizontal line. The y-coordinate of the horizontal line is 300, and the range of the x-coordinate is from 0 to 768. In this example, the horizontal line is missing in the range of x-coordinates that is between 256 and 511. Therefore, the horizontal line is divided into two parts and is not displayed correctly.

This issue occurs under one of the following conditions:

The computer is running a Windows Vista SP1 operating system that does not support the Windows Aero feature. For example, the computer is running Windows Vista Home Basic.
The computer is running a Windows Vista SP1 operating system that supports the Windows Aero feature. However, the feature is manually turned off. This feature may be manually turned off if you select a color scheme that does not support Windows Aero. For example, you select the Windows Vista Basic color scheme.
The computer has a graphic adapter that does not support the Windows Aero feature.

Notes

Windows Aero is the desktop experience that is available to computers that use a compatible graphics adapter and are running Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Ultimate, or Windows Vista Enterprise.
This issue does not occur on a Virtual PC that is running Windows Vista.

Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
