On This PageSYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario. You use the Hot Add Memory feature to add a large amount of random access memory (RAM) to a virtual machine. The virtual machine is running an x86-based version of Windows 7 Enterprise edition or of Windows 7 Ultimate edition. In this scenario, a memory corruption occurs. Because of this memory corruption, you receive a Stop error message. Additionally, the virtual machine restarts automatically. Note This memory corruption occurs when the total amount of RAM is equal to or larger than the supported memory limit of the operating system that is running on the virtual machine. To reproduce this issue, see the "Sample scenario" section. CAUSEWhen you use the hot add memory feature to add RAM to a virtual machine that is running an x86 edition of Windows 7, the maximum memory that you can add is 4GB. This is specified in the Windows SKU license. RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article.
