SYMPTOMS

You install the cumulative update package that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 977349 on a Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 server, this server is part of an Active Directory environment that has a large Active Directory database. In this situation, the update process fails. Additionally, you find the following error message in the QFE_DBSetup.log file:

Attempting to discover BackEnd SQL instance from AD.

LDAP Query (ConfigurationNamingContext): <LDAP://CN=Configuration,DC=DCName,DC=com>((&(objectClass=msRTCSIP-Pool)(msRTCSIP-PoolType:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2)(msRTCSIP-PoolDisplayName=poolname)));distinguishedName,msRTCSIP-BackendServer;subTree

LDAP Query (RootDomainNamingContext): <LDAP://DC=DCName,DC=com>((&(objectClass=msRTCSIP-Pool)(msRTCSIP-PoolType:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2)(msRTCSIP-PoolDisplayName=poolname)));distinguishedName,msRTCSIP-BackendServer;subTree

Could not locate SQL instance from AD.

Note
By default, the QFE_DBSetup.log file is located in C:\User\ User who installed the update \AppData\Local folder.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a time-out that occurs when the Dbqfeupdate.wsf update script runs the following LDAP query:
(ConfigurationNamingContext): <LDAP://CN=Configuration,DC=DCName,DC=com>((&(objectClass=msRTCSIP-Pool)(msRTCSIP-PoolType:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2)(msRTCSIP-PoolDisplayName=ocs2007r2pool)));distinguishedName,msRTCSIP-BackendServer;subTree
The Dbqfeupdate.wsf script runs an LDAP query on the non indexed objectClass attribute of Active Directory. This query may take several minutes to complete on a large Active Directory database. Therefore, the time-out occurs.

Note The default time-out value in the script is 300 seconds.

RESOLUTION

To fix this problem, apply the following cumulative update:
983568 Description of the cumulative update package for Office Communications Server 2007 R2 database: May 2010
