SYMPTOMS

You try to record audio by using the Sound Recorder application and a microphone in Windows Vista. When you play back the recording, you may not hear any sound.

Note The microphone in this example is the default logical capture device.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Microsoft High Definition (HD) Audio class driver in Windows Vista sets the volume slider for logical capture devices to 0 dB as a system default.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, adjust the recording volume slider from 0 dB to an acceptable volume. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound.
  3. Click Adjust system volume under the Sound option.
  4. Move the slider up to increase the volume.
