The list of supported formats is incorrect in the Sound Control Panel item in Windows Vista

SYMPTOMS

In Windows Vista, the Sound item in Control Panel includes the option to set a device format. However, the list of supported formats in the Sound item may be incorrect. This problem may occur when you use a legacy audio device that has hardware controls that can change the format of the device.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the driver for the legacy device is incompatible with Windows Vista.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, contact your independent hardware vendor to obtain a Windows Vista-compatible driver for your audio device.
