After you upgrade a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer to Windows Vista, you may no longer hear the audio handshake when you use a dial-up modem. However, the modem works and connects.

This problem occurs because certain modem drivers cannot stream audio to the computer audio device in Windows Vista. Therefore, you cannot hear the dial tone or the modem handshake.

This problem does not prevent the modem from working in Windows Vista. You may be able to re-enable this feature by contacting the OEM or the modem manufacturer for an updated Windows Vista-compatible modem driver.
