While attempting to use your Xbox 360 console as a Media Center Extender, you receive the error message: "Configuration Error"

When you try to add an Extender for Windows Media Center to your Windows Vista-based Media Center PC, you may receive the following error message:

This problem occurs if the Media Center certificate is corrupted or if the Network List Service is not running.

To fix the problem, try the following methods.

Method 1

Remove the Media Center Extender certificate. To remove the certificate, follow these steps:

1. Click Start

   , type mmc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

   If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
2. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
3. Click Certificates, and then click Add.
4. Select Computer account, and then click Next.
5. Select Local computer, and then click Finish.
6. Click OK.
7. In the Navigation Pane under Console Root, expand Certificates, expand Personal, and then click Certificates.
8. Right-click Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender Host, and then click Delete.

After you remove the certificate, uninstall the Extender, and then restart the Extender setup.

Method 2

Restart the Network List Service. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start

   , type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

   If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
2. In the list of services, verify that Started appears under Status and that Automatic appears under Startup Type for Network List Service.
3. If you have to modify the settings for the service, double-click the service, make the adjustment, and then click OK.
4. Restart Extender setup.
