SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. On a Windows Vista-based computer that includes a Windows SideShow-compatible device, you change the device settings in Control Panel. For example, you open the Windows SideShow item in Control Panel, and then you open the Change Device Settings window. Then, you perform one of the following actions:
  • You restart the Windows SideShow-compatible device, and then you immediately open the Change Device Settings window.
  • You restart the computer, and then you immediately open the Change Device Settings window.
  • You make a change to the language settings in the Change Device Settings window. You close the Change Device Settings window, and then you immediately reopen this window.

Note The device automatically restarts after a change is made to the language settings in the Change Device Settings window.
In this scenario, the settings in the Change Device Settings window appear to be incorrect. The device settings appear to have reverted to the original settings.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you reopen the Change Device Settings window after you restart either the device or the computer but before the device is completely initialized. In this situation, the Change Device Settings window displays the default settings instead of the updated settings.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • After you restart the device or the computer, wait for the device to finish restarting before you reopen the Change Device Settings window.
  • If the settings appear to be incorrect when you open the Change Device Settings window, press the BACKSPACE button, wait for the device to finish restarting, and then reopen the Change Device Settings window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
