Expand all | Collapse all

SYMPTOMS

When you back up and then restore Windows Vista, the Microsoft .NET Framework is not restored correctly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows Vista does not support writing the full set of files for the .NET Framework to the backup software.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, configure the backup software to include the all the files and the folders that exist inside the following folders:
  • %windir%\assembly
  • %windir%\Microsoft.Net

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

By correctly backing up the .NET Framework, you can make sure that applications that are built by using the .NET Framework continue to function correctly when you restore the files.

For more information about how Windows Vista determines the files to report to the backup software, visit the following Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site:

The system writer in Windows Vista provides the list of files to the backup software. The system writer is part of the Volume Shadow Copy API in Windows Vista. For more information about how to use the Volume Shadow Copy API, visit the following MSDN Web site:
