SYMPTOMS

In Windows Vista, a folder on the All Programs menu does not open as expected.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the folder is in one of the following locations:
  • \ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
  • \Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, move the folder to another location. For example, move the folder to one of the following locations:
  • \ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
  • \Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. In Windows Vista, create a folder named New in the following location:
    \ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\
  2. Create a shortcut for the New folder.
  3. Click Start
