Article ID: 945010 - Last Review: December 21, 2007 - Revision: 1.0 Error message when you press CTRL+SHIFT+F3 to try to enter audit mode from the Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard in Windows Vista: "Cannot finish installation"SYMPTOMSYou run the Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard in Windows Vista. When you press CTRL+SHIFT+F3 to try to enter audit mode, you receive the following error message: Cannot finish installation. To install Windows on this computer, please reinstall. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the OOBE Wizard is still processing messages after the window is uninitialized. The OOBE Wizard uses the Direct User Interface (DUI). This problem occurs if the DUI is uninitialized while there are still messages in the OOBE Wizard message loop. When the OOBE Wizard tries to process these messages, an error occurs because the DUI framework is no longer running. This behavior causes the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. Additionally, this behavior prevents the "reboot in audit mode flag" from being set. Therefore, the OOBE Wizard is restarted the next time that the computer starts. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, continue to the next screen of the OOBE Wizard before you press CTRL+SHIFT+F3 to enter audit mode. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. APPLIES TO
