The dialog box for the Toggle Keys or Filter Keys prompt does not have the focus in Windows Vista

You perform one of the following actions in Windows Vista:

• You hold down the NUM LOCK key for more than 5 seconds to turn on Toggle Keys.
• You hold down right-side SHIFT key for more than 5 seconds to turn on Filter Keys.

In either scenario, a dialog box appears, and you are prompted whether you want to enable Toggle Keys or Filter Keys. However, the dialog box does not have the focus as expected. Therefore, you cannot directly give an appropriate response to the prompt.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. To work around this problem, use the ALT+TAB keyboard shortcut, or use the mouse to select the dialog box, and then give the appropriate response to the prompt.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Filter Keys is an Accessibility option that you can use to control the keyboard repeat rate and to ignore repeated keys. The keyboard shortcut for Filter Keys is the right-side SHIFT key. After you hold down the right-side SHIFT key for more than 5 seconds, a Filter Keys dialog box appears.

Toggle Keys is an Accessibility option that sets the keyboard to make a beep sound when you press one of the following keys:

• CAPS LOCK
• NUM LOCK
• SCROLL LOCK

The keyboard shortcut for Toggle Keys is the NUM LOCK key. After you hold down the NUM LOCK key for more than 5 seconds, a Toggle Keys dialog box appears.
