When a SATA hard disk on a Windows Vista-based computer is operating in Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (PATA) mode, the computer may crash
Consider the following scenario:
You are using a Windows Vista-based computer. The computer has a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disk drive that has full-disk encryption capability. In this scenario, when the SATA hard disk drive is operating in Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (PATA) mode, the hard disk drive may stop responding. Additionally, the computer may crash.
Hotfix information A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
