You receive an access error message when an application calls the StgOpenStorage method on a Windows Vista-based computer

When you run an application on a Windows Vista operating system as a user who is not an administrator, you receive one of the following access error messages when the application calls the StgOpenStorage method:

Windows VistaWindows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)This problem occurs if the program process impersonates a user who is not an administrator.

In Windows Vista, session namespaces have been hardened so that a limited set of users has rights to create a named object in the session namespace. Structured storage tries to create a named event that is used for synchronization. If the current thread token does not have rights to create a named event in the session namespace, the StgOpenStorage method fails. Additionally, you receive an access denied error message.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
