On a Windows Vista-based computer, an application that uses the EnableStatic method of the Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration class may not always set a static IP address for a network adapter

Consider the following scenario:

• You are running a Windows Vista-based computer.
• You use an application to programmatically set a static IP address for a network adapter.
• This application uses the EnableStatic method of the Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration class.

In this scenario, the operation may regularly fail.

Note For example, you can use some virtual private networking (VPN) tools to programmatically set a static IP address for a network adapter.

This issue may occur because the EnableStatic method may occasionally fail with error code "NETCFG_E_NO_WRITE_LOCK (0x8004A024)" in a Windows Vista environment. If the application does not capture the error code, the operation fails.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
