You cannot start Windows Recovery Environment after you start a Windows Vista-based or a Windows Server 2008-based computer by using the installation DVD that has been provided by the computer manufacturer

SYMPTOMS

After you start a Windows Vista-based or a Windows Server 2008-based computer by using the installation DVD that has been provided by the computer manufacturer, the Repair your computer option is not displayed. Additionally, you cannot start the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Install Now screen may not be displayed automatically if an answer file contains the product key information.

RESOLUTION

To use the installation DVD to start Windows Recovery Environment, follow these steps:
  1. Use the installation DVD to start the computer, and then run Windows Vista Setup or Windows Server 2008 Setup.
  2. When the Gather Information screen is displayed, press SHIFT+F10 to open a Command Prompt window.
  3. Type the following commands to start Windows Recovery Environment. Press ENTER after each command.
    cd /d %systemdrive%\sources\recovery
    RecEnv.exe
