On This PageSYMPTOMSOn a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008, when an application tries to obtain an exclusive lock to a volume, the attempt is unsuccessful. Additionally, you may receive the following error message: Access is denied This problem typically occurs after the system runs for several hours. When this problem occurs, you may discover that the System process is holding handles to some volumes. Note This problem does not occur on a computer that is running Windows Vista without Service Pack 1. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Server service proactively opens handles to some volumes and does not close them. RESOLUTIONHotfix informationWindows VistaA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article.
