Error message when you use Windows Media Center to burn a CD or a DVD from a folder that represents the root of a drive in Windows Vista: "An error has occurred in burning the CD/DVD"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

On a computer that is running Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows Vista Home Premium, you have pictures that are stored on a hard disk drive.
In Windows Vista Media Center, you use the Library Setup Wizard to add the root of the hard disk drive to the list of folders that Media Center watches for media files.
You start the Burn CD/DVD Wizard in Media Center, you add pictures from Picture Library from the folder that represents the root of the hard disk drive, and then you start the burn process.

In this scenario, you receive the following error message:

BURN FAILURE
An error has occurred in burning the CD/DVD

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the root of a drive is included as a folder in the watched list in Media Center Library Setup, and you try to burn pictures from this folder.

To work around this problem, add the specific subfolder in which the pictures are stored to the list of watched folders in Media Center Library Setup instead of adding the root drive. For example, do not add the following root folder:

D:\

Instead, add the following subfolder:

D:\Pictures

Steps to reproduce the behavior

Add the root drive as a folder to watch

Install Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate on a computer that has a C drive and a D drive.
Copy some pictures to the root of the D drive.
Start Media Center.
Click Picture Library.
Right-click any image in Picture Library, and then click Library Setup.
Click Add folder to watch, and then click Next.
Click Add folders on this computer, and then click Next.
Click Local drive (D:), and then click Next.
Click Finish to complete the Library Setup Wizard.

Try to burn a CD or a DVD

Insert a blank CD or DVD.
In the Media Center main menu, point to Tasks, and then click burn cd/dvd.
Select Data CD (or DVD).
Type a name for the label, and then click Next.
Click Picture Library to browse for media.
In the Choose Pictures window, click Local Disk (D:), and then select the pictures that you want to burn. Pictures can be in the root of the D drive or in any subfolders. Click Next when you are finished.
Click Burn CD (or DVD).
In the Initiating Copy dialog box, click Yes. The burn progress indicator briefly appears before you receive the error message.
