SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a portable computer that is running Windows Vista. While you are using Windows Media Center on this computer, the computer's battery power runs low. In this scenario, you receive the following warning message:
Plug in your computer to keep from losing your work, or put your computer to sleep so that you can change the battery
However, this warning message is incorrect. You must not change the battery while the computer is asleep (on standby).

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

If you change the battery while the computer is asleep, you may lose any unsaved work. To change the battery safely, shut down or hibernate the computer, and then change the battery.

If the battery power runs low while Windows Media Center is not running, you receive the following correct message:
Your battery is low (nn%). If you need to continue using your computer, either plug in your computer, or shut it down and then change the battery.
