Stop error when a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer enters sleep mode: "Stop 0x000000FE BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER"

You are running a Windows Vista-based or a Windows Server 2008-based computer that has an internal USB device installed. When the computer enters sleep mode, the computer may stop responding. Additionally, you may receive the following Stop error: Note In this error message, the value of the Parameter4 may vary.

This problem occurs because of an error in the Microsoft USB Hub driver (Usbhub.sys). This problem occurs under specific timing conditions if the connection state of a USB device changes while the USB Hub port is in a Reset state. The connection state of the USB device changes when the power to the device is either removed or restored. When this occurs, the USB Hub port seems to have a state of Connected instead of Enabled. However, the Microsoft USB Hub driver does not handle the Connected state correctly.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
