Error message that is similar to the following when you use the Repair option for a local area connection in Windows XP: "The following steps of the repair operation failed”

When you use the Repair option for a local area connection on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

This behavior occurs if the DNS Client service is not started on the computer.

The Domain Name System (DNS) Client service resolves and caches DNS names for the computer. If the DNS Client service is stopped, the computer cannot resolve DNS names and locate Active Directory domain controllers. If the service is disabled, services that depend on the DNS Client service cannot start.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the Services list, double-click DNS Client.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.
4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
5. On the File menu, click Exit to close the Services snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
6. Restart the computer.
