When you run the Setup program for any of the versions of Microsoft Office
listed at the beginning of this article, the following error message may
appear:
Setup Error 797
CAUSE
This problem may occur when you attempt to install Microsoft Office on a
computer that has a corrupted Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 swap file, Win386.swp. In addition, this problem may occur when Win386.swp is too small.
NOTE: If you run out of hard disk drive space or virtual memory is not large enough, the Windows swap file will be too small. Other Possible Causes
WORKAROUNDSwap FileTo work around the problem when you have a corrupted swap file, restart the computer in MS-DOS mode, delete the Win386.swp file in the Windows folder, and restart the computer.To do this, follow these steps:
Running ProgramsShut down any programs that are running, including TSRs and anti-virus programs. You may need to check for TSRs in Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Win.ini, and the Windows registry.Earlier Versions of Microsoft OfficeWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.If there is an earlier version of Microsoft Office on your computer, it may be necessary to remove it. To do this, follow these steps:
Incompatible DLL FilesOlder or incompatible versions of certain DLL files can cause this error message. Missing DLL files can also cause this error message. To replace the files, copy the following files from the Office 97 compact disc to the \Windows\System folder on your hard diskx:\Os\System\Mfc40.dll
where x is the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

OFF97: Troubleshooting Installation from Compact Disc Media Win.ini File Has Been Set to Read-OnlyIf the Win.ini file has been set to Read-Only, use the following steps to change it so it can be written to:

If the swap file is too small, deleting the swap file does not correct the
problem. You must create more free space on the hard disk, specify a larger
swap file size, or create a swap file on a disk drive with more disk space,
and then restart Windows.
