OFF97: Setup Error 797 Appears When You Run Office Setup

When you run the Setup program for any of the versions of Microsoft Office listed at the beginning of this article, the following error message may appear:

This problem may occur when you attempt to install Microsoft Office on a computer that has a corrupted Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 swap file, Win386.swp. In addition, this problem may occur when Win386.swp is too small.

NOTE: If you run out of hard disk drive space or virtual memory is not large enough, the Windows swap file will be too small.

Other Possible Causes

• Other programs, including Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) and anti-virus programs, may be running.
  
  
• There may be files and registry keys from earlier versions of Microsoft Office on your computer.
  
  
• Incompatible version of the Mfc40.dll, Msvcrt.dll, Comdlg32.dll, and/or the Msvcrt40.dll file.
  
  
• Using a disk compression program on the hard disk.
  
  
• Problems reading the CD-ROM.
  
  
• The Win.ini file is read-only.

Swap File

To work around the problem when you have a corrupted swap file, restart the computer in MS-DOS mode, delete the Win386.swp file in the Windows folder, and restart the computer.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the Start menu, click Shut Down.
2. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart The Computer In MS-DOS Mode, and then click Yes.
3. At the command prompt, switch to the Windows folder by typing
   cd drive:\Windows
   where drive is the letter of the drive for the hard disk in which the Windows folder is located. Typically, this is drive C.
   
   NOTE: The swap file exists in the Windows folder if Windows manages virtual memory settings on your computer. If you chose to manage virtual memory settings on the computer, the swap file exists at the root level of the hard disk. To determine whether Windows manages virtual memory settings, right-click My Computer, click Properties, click Performance, and then click Virtual Memory.
   
   
4. To delete the swap file, type the following at the command prompt:
   del Win386.swp
5. After deleting the swap file, restart your computer.

Running Programs

Shut down any programs that are running, including TSRs and anti-virus programs. You may need to check for TSRs in Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Win.ini, and the Windows registry.

Earlier Versions of Microsoft Office

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

If there is an earlier version of Microsoft Office on your computer, it may be necessary to remove it. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Run Setup from the media for the earlier version of Microsoft Office.
2. Click Remove All in maintenance mode Setup.
3. On the Start menu, click Run.
4. Type regedit and click OK.
5. Select the following registry subkey:

         HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Office
   					

6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
8. Run the Microsoft Office Upgrade Wizard (Offcln97.exe). The Upgrade Wizard is located in the ValuPack\OffClean folder of the Microsoft Office 97 CD-ROM.
9. Click Remove old Office components of your choice.
10. In the Upgrade Wizard, select those Office 4.x or 95 components that you want to remove.
11. After the Upgrade Wizard removes the selected Microsoft Office 4.x and 95 components, run Setup for Microsoft Office 97. During Setup, if the Upgrade Wizard prompts you to remove the Office 4.x and 95 components, click No.

Incompatible DLL Files

Older or incompatible versions of certain DLL files can cause this error message. Missing DLL files can also cause this error message. To replace the files, copy the following files from the Office 97 compact disc to the \Windows\System folder on your hard disk where x is the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

Win.ini File Has Been Set to Read-Only

If the Win.ini file has been set to Read-Only, use the following steps to change it so it can be written to:

1. On the Start menu, point to Programs and click Windows Explorer.
2. Click the Windows folder, and right-click Win.ini.
3. Click Properties.
4. In the Attributes group, click to clear the Read-only check box.
5. Click OK.

If the swap file is too small, deleting the swap file does not correct the problem. You must create more free space on the hard disk, specify a larger swap file size, or create a swap file on a disk drive with more disk space, and then restart Windows.
