OFF97: Error Message: Microsoft Camcorder Requires Microsoft Windows 95 to Record and Play Movies

If you start Microsoft Camcorder 97 under Microsoft Windows NT, version 3.51 or 4.0, or Microsoft Windows 2000, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Camcorder records and plays movies only under Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98. However, you can play stand-alone movies on a Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0 workstation or using Microsoft Windows 2000, if you create them in Microsoft Camcorder under Windows 95/98.

The Setup program does not install Microsoft Camcorder when you install Microsoft Office 97; it is part of the ValuPack, which is on the Microsoft Office 97 CD-ROM. Microsoft Camcorder allows you to capture and play back screen events. It allows you to create a movie and save it as an Audio-Video Interleaved (*.avi) file; you can export an .avi file as a stand-alone executable (*.exe) file. If you want to play the movie under Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000, play the movie by using an .exe file that you create from Microsoft Camcorder on a computer running Microsoft Windows 95/98.

NOTE: There are currently no plans to create a Windows NT version of Microsoft Camcorder.

Users may want to try Microsoft Producer, instead of using Microsoft Camcorder 97. Microsoft Producer is a free add-in to Microsoft PowerPoint 2002. You can use Microsoft Producer to capture, synchronize, and publish audio, video, slides, and images. Microsoft recommends that you only install Microsoft Producer on computers that run Microsoft Office XP and one of the following operating systems:

• Microsoft Windows XP Professional
• Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
