SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use any of the mail merge features in Microsoft Publisher, you receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you see the following information:
Mspub.exe has caused an invalid page fault in module pubmerge.dll.

CAUSE

The problem occurs if Microsoft Publisher detects a newer version of Msjint32.dll on the system during Setup.

Publisher Setup looks for the Msjint32.dll file in the C:\Windows\System folder. If Setup detects a version of that file that is either the same date or newer then the one that Microsoft Publisher ships with, it doesn't make the necessary registry entries or install the needed Dao3032.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the following steps:
  1. Locate, back up, and rename or delete the Msjint32.dll file in the C:\Windows\System folder.
  2. Delete the Setup.stf for Publisher. By default this is in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Publisher\Setup folder.
  3. Reinstall Microsoft Publisher 97.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Publisher 97 Standard Edition, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
