WD98: Templates and Add-ins "Missing" After Word 98 Upgrade

After you upgrade to Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the "Templates and Add-ins" you had in Microsoft Word version 6.0 appear to be missing after you start Word 98.

This functionality is by design. When you upgrade to Word 98 Macintosh Edition (install over Word 6 for the Macintosh), all templates and add-ins that were kept in the Word Startup Folder (6) are not copied to the Startup:Word Folder. In addition, the settings in the Templates And Add-ins dialog box are also lost after you upgrade to Word 98.

To work around this behavior, copy or move the templates and add-ins you want from the Word Startup Folder (6) to the Startup:Word folder. For Word 98, the startup folder is: For Word 6.x, the startup folder is: NOTE: If you renamed your hard disk, substitute that name in place of Macintosh HD in the preceding folders.

When you work on a document, you can typically use only the AutoText entries, macros, and custom toolbars, menu settings, and shortcut keys that are stored in the template attached to the document or in the Normal template. To use any of these items if they are stored in another template, you can load the other template as a global template.

To load the template as a global template, click "Templates and Add-Ins" on the Tools menu. After you load the template, items stored in that template are available to any document you open or create during the current session of Word. When you have finished using these items, you can unload the template to conserve system resources.

Add-ins and templates that you loaded by using the "Templates and Add-Ins" command are unloaded when you close Word. To load an add-in or template each time you start Word, copy the add-in or template to the Startup folder. (To determine the startup location, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the File Locations tab.

Loading and Unloading a Global Template or Add-in Program

In the Templates and Add-in dialog box, click Add to load a template or add-in if it does not appear in the "Global templates and add-ins" list. To remove an item, select the item in the "Global templates and add-ins" list and click Remove. To temporarily disable an item, click to clear the check box for the item you want to unload. Note that the item remains in the list. To automatically load a template or add-in every time you start Word, place the template or add-in in the Startup folder.

NOTES:

• If you unload a template that is located in the startup folder, Word unloads the template for the current session of Word but will automatically reload it the next time you start Word. To locate or change your Startup setting, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the File Locations tab.
• The Remove button in the Templates and Add-ins dialog box is not available if the template you select is located in your startup folder.
• Unloading a template or add-in from Word does not remove it from your computer.
