SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft PowerPoint 98 or 2001 file that contains objects that have texture fills in PowerPoint 4.0 format, the objects lose the fills and default to their original fill format. For placeholders, such as the title text box, the default fill will be set to none.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

You can work around this behavior by changing the placeholder fill color on the master slide to a solid, pattern, or one-color gradient fill. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Select the placeholder object that you want to fill.
  2. On the Format menu, click AutoShape.
  3. In the Format AutoShape dialog box, click the Colors and Lines tab.
  4. Click the Fill Color list, and select the color that you want.
  5. Click OK.
