Problems with NoCommonGroups Policy in Windows NT

SYMPTOMS

After you install Internet Explorer version 4.0 or 4.01 on a Windows NT-based computer that has Service Pack 3 installed, the system policy "Remove common program groups from Start menu" may not function correctly.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, remove the Windows Desktop Update component. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer version 4.0 and 4.01. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
