SYMPTOMS

When you configure Microsoft Backup to back up your registry, the registry may not be backed up.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either or both of the following conditions exist:
  • You are not backing up the Windows folder.
  • All the files that you are backing up are on a drive other than the boot drive.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the appropriate method:
  • Back up the Windows folder when you back up the registry.
  • Back up at least one file on the boot drive when you back up the registry.

MORE INFORMATION

The registry contains several references that are dependent on device drivers and dynamic-link library (DLL) files located in the Windows folder. The registry can not be restored properly without the corresponding Windows folder.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
