OL98: Toolbars Moved in a Mail Message Are Not Persistent

Toolbar customizations in a mail message, such as moving or adding toolbars are not retained after you exit Microsoft Outlook 98.

If Microsoft Word is set as your default mail editor, you can't save changes to the e-mail templates when they are modified during an Outlook session. Any changes made to the menus and toolbars of the template are retained only while Outlook is running.

This does not occur if your default e-mail editor is Plain Text, HTML, or Microsoft Rich Text.

Open the email.dot template in Word. Make your changes and save the modified document template.

Change your default e-mail editor to Plain Text, HTML, or Microsoft Rich Text and then make changes.

When you make modifications to the toolbar, menu, or buttons when you use Word as your e-mail editor, those changes only remain during the current Outlook session. Once you quit and restart Outlook, any changes are lost.

You can make permanent modifications to the email.dot file only if you open it in Word. A limitation is that any changes made are reflected in Word also. This may not be acceptable.

Customizing Toolbars and Menus in Word

1. On the Help menu, click Contents And Index.
2. Click the Contents tab, select the Customizing Microsoft Word option, and then select the Customizing Toolbars and Menus option.
3. Select and view, the appropriate topic from the list.

To Change Your Default E-mail Editor

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the Mail Format tab, select the Plain Text, HTML, or Microsoft Rich Text option.
3. Click OK to close the Options window.
